In Africa, we still import too much paper, clothing or furniture, sometimes even raw materials that we could recycle locally. However, plastic can be transformed into paving stones or bags, and composting organic waste can nourish our farmland. By investing in the circular economy, we reduce these imports, develop our own industries and create sustainable jobs. Instead of sending our waste to Asia or Europe, let’s transform it here, with our own factories, our own minds!

All too often, our ways of thinking and acting remain destructive and unbalanced. We lack solidarity and respect for life (that of others) and for the planet as a whole. We will need to raise awareness and draw on concrete examples to move beyond these mindsets. Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) initiatives can serve as examples and help us to envisage better solutions. I congratulate Patrick on his exceptional work in bringing to life an educational platform that has the potential to guide us in this direction.

The very essence of the circular economy is the intelligence of materials and the recognition and respect for objects.

Developing a circular economy strategy in Africa must first address the need, define it, and seek answers with the objects already available or design them with the elements and materials of the territory.

This involves mobilising cooperation to sweep away the jobs of those who define the need and design solutions for those who repair, share, and recover objects and materials.

Rediscovering the sense of respect for what we take from nature will create far more jobs than copying the Western models that are now being questioned due to their resource gluttony, the Achilles' heel of consumer society.
